When I say “I met Olivia Culpo” I still have trouble comprehending that it actually happened. If you know me, you know that I am a huge Olivia Culpo fan. Actually, a huge fan is an understatement, Olivia Culpo is basically my idol. When I discovered she would be at the Boston Film Festival at a theater only a 3-minute walk from my school, I bought tickets as fast as I could. I thought this could actually be my opportunity to meet her, even though there was still a chance I wouldn’t. Rushing to the theater only 3 minutes before showtime, my friend and I waited in a line that reached all the way to the concessions of people waiting to see the movie premiere. Little did we know how big this premiere was going to be. There were photographers and videographers recording the whole event. I’ll be completely honest, I had no idea what the movie was about nor did I know any of the main actors. I just went hoping to see Olivia and didn’t do any background research on the movie. We took our seats in the theater and still no sight of Olivia. As the movie started, the main actors started trickling into the seats behind us. Even though we had no idea who they were, it was still pretty cool to see a movie with the actors and director behind you.
About 15 minutes into the movie my friend nudges me to the look to the right and I see someone in a sparkly black jumpsuit sneaking into the theater. Trying to stay calm, I try to focus on the movie and refrain from going up to talk to her. Actually, my friend did try to get me to go up to her and introduce myself but I didn’t want to seem too “stalker-ish”. As the movie went on, it became harder for me to focus on the movie when my idol was 3 rows behind me. I was trying to think of ways to meet her without being a creepy fan that she is probably used to encountering. So I did the most logical thing I could do in the moment, follow her into the bathroom. Not creepy at all, right? After washing my hands and touching up my makeup, I waited to “run into” Olivia. She finally comes out and after waiting a few moments to not bombard her, I turn to her and say “Aren’t you Olivia Culpo?” (as if I didn’t know already). She looked up and smiled at me and said yes she was, so I went up to her and shook my hand and said, “Hi I’m Elise Sanchez and I am a fashion blogger and you actually liked a few of my pictures last week of me wearing some of your clothes.” She replied, “Oh no way, really? What clothes were you wearing of mine?” I went on to explain how I was wearing her line with Le Tote and then I further introduced myself and told her I go to Emerson College down the road and that one day I aspire to be like her one day. She replied back to me, “Thank you, you are so sweet. Thank you for coming to the premiere today.” Still starstruck, I shakily asked Olivia if we can take a picture. She said yes and looked at the time on my phone and said, “It’s only 10:30, wow I thought it was like 1 am. I am exhausted and I have Danny’s jacket on” the rest of what she said I don’t particularly remember, I was just so caught up in the fact that she was talking to me as if she was my friend. She even mentioned her boyfriend, New England Patriot’s player Danny Amendola. Attempting to take selfies, I was too shaky and wanted a better picture, so I asked if we could possibly take a real picture so she suggested that her friend could take a picture of us. After taking multiple pictures, I thanked her and her friend and made small talk with them as we entered the theater. Not only did I meet my idol, I actually had a conversation with her. I couldn’t have been happier in that moment. I sat back down in my seat and thanked my friend for encouraging me to go meet her because if it wasn’t for her I might have chickened out. After meeting her in person and looking at the pictures of us, I honestly did not think it was possible for her to be prettier in person but she was. Olivia was everything I thought she would be and more. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to meet her and still can’t wrap my mind around all that happened. I look up to my idols as inspiration for what I want to accomplish, and meeting Olivia Culpo and seeing how nice and genuine she makes me want to work harder to be that for someone else.
Two weeks into school, and it’s officially safe to say that I love Boston. Living in the city has always been a dream of mine, and the fact that I am living in the center of downtown Boston is surreal. I step outside my dorm and I’m in the Boston Common, I walk ten minutes and I’m in one of the best shopping districts in Boston. While it has been different not having a car, I’ve grown to enjoy walking everywhere. It’s now normal for me to walk six plus miles a day.
Aside from me learning how to navigate the T, the funniest part of Boston has been hearing people talk about “the heat”, which is a meager 80 degrees. But then again, I get laughed at when I explain how in Texas our “snow days” are when we have a few icicles on our houses and some ice on the roads. My few southern friends and I are actively preparing ourselves mentally for an actual winter. I suppose that surviving the snow after mastering the city will have to be my new adventure.
While Boston has been unbelievably amazing, it’s still not home. I’m reminded of this when I say “y’all” and then there is an almost immediate reaction from the company around me. For the first time in a long time, I now have to think twice about what I’m about to say for fear anything remotely southern slips out. People definitely have gotten a kick out of trying to imitate “Texas Elise” through the use of a thick southern accent (which I don’t have). I didn’t even think I had an accent of any sort until I met people with heavy accents from Boston, New Jersey, Michigan, and many other places. Being in Boston also makes me appreciate the Mexican food back home so much more. I am going straight to Chuy’s when I land in Austin to finally have creamy jalapeno sauce and queso again.
Besides the lack of Mexican food and usage of “y’all”, I am beyond happy here. Stayed tuned for the next adventures as I complete my transition from Austin to Boston.
After staying up till 3 am to pack at the last-minute (definitely don’t recommend this), then proceeding to wake up at 4:30 to go to the airport, I am now on my way to LA to start my journey from Austin to Boston. Lots and lots of tears have been shed this week as it’s finally hit me that I am moving 2,000 miles away from home. Before it was just a dream of mine to go to college in a big city, but now my fantasies are becoming realities. Despite being so far from everything I’ve ever known in Austin, I am so excited to start this new journey of my life in a brand new city. I’m even looking forward to the cold, even though, admittedly, I have no idea how to handle cold weather. Even after being asked the question “are you sure you want to live in the cold?” millions of times, I still reply “I think of it as an opportunity to get a new wardrobe!” every time. If I can survive sweltering, 100-degree weather, then I can survive the cold.
Overall, I am incredibly blessed to be going to school at Emerson. I am so very thankful and overwhelmed from all the love and support I have gotten from everyone. Thank you for all the kind words and tips on how to survive cold weather and this new journey, and I can’t wait to share my many adventures and experiences with y’all!
Here a few of my favorite looks and tips so you can conquer street style this Summer and Fall.
“Sweat-skirt” – This is absolutely the most comfortable skirt I have ever worn. I call it my “sweat-shirt” because it’s close to a sweatshirt material and has an athletic feel. It is a prime example of Athleisure and is perfect to dress up or down (I personally love pairing it with a crop top). And to top things off, it was only $10 at H&M!!!
Platform Sneakers- For a while, I was searching for the perfect pair of dressy sneakers and I came across these Steve Madden platform sneakers and had to buy them in two colors. These shoes are very comfortable even with the tall platform. I also love that I gain a few inches with these shoes, without feeling like I’m wearing heels. (I am only 5’4 after all). Click here to find these sneakers.
Graphic Tees- A good graphic tee is my weakness. They’re perfect for a casual lazy day or you can wear them out and just throw on some booties to dress up the outfit. My secret to finding the perfect graphic tee is to search in the Men’s sections in stores. Don’t be afraid! I would highly recommend searching for graphic tees in the men’s forever 21 section, which is where I find the majority of my tees.
Bomber Jackets- Bomber Jackets are very versatile and are the perfect quick addition to any street wear outfit. Every time I travel on a plane, I make sure to bring a bomber jacket with me because not only are they super comfortable they also make the perfect pillow. I recently purchased a short sleeve bomber jacket that I am in love with! It was only $16 at Nordstrom Rack.
Body Suit- Body suits are staple pieces that everyone should have in their closet. I highly recommend having a black and white simple body suit. Pair bodysuits with skirts, shorts, or even jeans to achieve a flawless “tucked in” look. For bodysuits, I would look for them at fast fashion stores such as H&M, Zara, and Forever 21.
Slip on Vans- Vans are a wardrobe must have! Even though these shoes may seem “so middle school”, you’re really never too old to have a pair of vans. I personally love these shoes because they are perfect for when you’re in a rush and need a pair of shoes to slip on.
Black Baseball Hat- I have never been one to wear hats but after I purchased this black leather hat, I have quickly become a major fan. This item is also one of my “go to airport items”. If you’re not in the mood to wear makeup or fix your hair, throw on your black baseball cap to instantly add to your outfit.
2 inches in 2 months… Seems too good to be true, right? I am going to be completely honest, I was skeptical to try Gold Crush Hair Vitamins at first. I thought my hair was going to grow maybe half of an inch. After 2 months of taking the vitamins, I was shocked to see that my hair grew over 2 inches! Not only has my hair grown longer, it has become stronger and healthier. The vitamin is great for your hair and also great for your skin, nails, and overall health. I highly recommend Gold Crush Hair Vitamins if you are also trying to grow your hair out this summer!
