4 Tips Before You Decide to Cut Your Hair Short

IMG_0316I’m leaving 7 inches of my hair behind in 2017! I decided I couldn’t go any longer without cutting my hair short and I am so happy I made this decision. When I first cut my hair short five years ago, I will admit, it wasn’t with the best intention in mind (I did it because one of my boyfriends said I shouldn’t cut my hair short). That probably wasn’t the best motivation for a dramatic haircut…But anyways, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Although I love my new haircut, it does require a lot more work than longer hair.

I came up with four tips if you are considering cutting your hair short. Maybe you want a fresh start to the New Year, or maybe you’re just ready for a change.

“A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life” – Coco Chanel

Here are some pros & cons and tips to consider before you take the leap to cut your hair short.

Pros & Cons:

  • Trendy
  • Can make you look more mature
  • Easy to blow dry
  • Easy to straighten/curl
  • Change/fresh start
  • Donate hair (if your hair is long enough)

  • Have to blow dry hair more regularly
  • No more top knots, ponytails, or any high updos
  • Have to style constantly
  • Regular haircuts to maintain the length

  1. Make sure you are 100% committed to short hair because it will be awhile before you can have long hair again.
  2. Do your research! Google pictures of haircuts that you want & bring them to your hairdresser. For instance, at my last haircut, I asked her to give me a “Khloe Kardashian bob”.
  3. Test out what you would look like with short hair. Get an app or take a picture and create the illusion your hair is short. You don’t want to go into this commitment without having a general idea of what you’ll look like.
  4. Lastly, ask your hairdresser to cut your hair a little longer than you had originally planned so that they are able to go back and perfect your desired length. It’s better safe than sorry.

I hope these tips were helpful and hopefully gave you some closure on your haircut decision. I definitely encourage anyone who is constantly considering shorter hair to just go for it! You may be surprised how much you love having shorter hair!

Happy 2018! xoxo Elise

Here are some fun New Year’s Eve outfits to start 2017 right.

Pairing a fun skirt with a simple top is an easy way to put together a New Year’s Outfit. With a high neck tank, extra jewelry is not needed. A super easy way to create an outfit is to start with a simple black skirt and pair it with a statement top. To top off your outfit, add a simple clutch or crossbody purse and put on a pair of heeled boots or wedges. The top I am wearing is from Design Lab, the mini-skirt is from Cotton On, and the booties are from Target.

Here are some other examples of easy ways to pair a skirt and a top. Crop tops are great to pair with high waisted skirts. If you don’t have a crop top, simply tie up your favorite tee to the side or tuck it into the front of your skirt ( pictured in the first photo above). Surprisingly enough, one of my favorite places to find skirts is Goodwill. Goodwill has fun and unique skirts that you won’t find anywhere else. Another awesome place where you are sure to find a skirt is Forever 21.

A simple black dress makes a perfect outfit for New Year’s Eve. The Black dress with the blue detail above is Design Lab and the purse is from Sam Moon. What I love about this dress is the small accent of blue. To add a pop of color, I added the blue crossbody purse and to make the outfit edgier I wore my black booties. This dress can be dressed up with heels, and so can the other dress pictured with the ruffle and mesh detail. The second dress pictured is from Design Lab. The ruffles and mesh on this dress create a fun and playful look. For a pop of color, I added statement earrings from Design Lab and a red crossbody purse from Forever 21. These two dresses have endless options when it comes to accessorizing. That’s what is great about a simple black dress: you can dress it up in so many ways.

Here are some other fun mini-dresses. In these outfits, I dressed them up with a pair of tights. Wearing tights is a simple way to complete an outfit. Also, pairing a leather or suede jacket to a mini-dress can create an edgy look. Mini-dresses are so easy to dress up or down, so based on how fancy your New Year’s Eve event is, there are endless options with a mini-dress.

For a more casual look, pair an oversized sweater with a skirt. With a solid color sweater, pair your favorite leather, print, or even glitter skirt with it. In the pictures above, the sweater and choker are from Design Lab and the leather skirt and over-the-knee boots are from Forever 21.

If you’re not really a skirt or dress person, try wearing a romper. In both of the outfits above, I wore gray Sam Edelman over-the-knee boots, but rompers can also be dressed up with heels as well. The short sleeve romper is from Marshall’s and the long sleeve velvet romper is from Target. Rompers can be easily accessorized by a choker or dangle necklace.

On New Year’s Eve, you don’t have to wear a skirt, dress, or romper: you can wear jeans! Wearing a nice blouse with jeans and heels can make the perfect outfit. By wearing the off the shoulder silk blouse, I dressed up a simple pair of black jeans. I accessorized by adding gold statement earrings from Design Lab and a black sequined crossbody purse. A nice silk, velvet, or sequined blouse is perfect for New Years. To make the outfit even dressier, try wearing heels with your jeans.  My silk off-the-shoulder shirt is from Forever 21, the shoes are from target, and the jeans are from Goodwill.

Statement earrings are a great way to dress up and add pops of color to your outfit. All of the earrings above are from Design Lab.

For a fancy New Year’s Eve event, wear a maxi-dress with accents of sparkle. This dress above is from Design Lab, and what I love about this dress is the distressed pattern and accents of silver. Instead of a simple solid color maxi dress, try wearing a fun print with some accents of sparkle. To accessorize, wear a pair of heels (colored heels can add a fun pop of color), a clutch, and you can even add a colored lip.
